EASTON

After establishing Terre Rouge in Amador County in the late 80s focusing on Rhône varietals, we started the EASTON label in 1991 for other varietals. Barbera has been grown in the Sierra Foothills for decades and we make several from different sites and also different clones of Barbera. In some years we also make Cabernet Franc, Ganay Noir, Cabernet blends, Pinot Noir. and other estoteric wines that Bill Easton loves to play with.

NEW RELEASE

We are excited to release our first Gamay Noir from the fanous Barsotti Vineyard!

Gamay Noir, grown at the 3,000 foot elevation in the decomposed granite soils of El Dorado County, is the same Gamay clone that is used in the Beaujolais region.  The region has warm days and cold nights caused by cooled air channeled down the American River Canyon from the High Sierra peaks to the East.  It was artisan-crafted, with whole-cluster fermentation, and hand-punch downs.  Barrel-aging was in older French oak barrels.  We bottled this wine in late Spring 2024.

This is the first release of our Barbera grown at Valley's Edge Vineyard in the Shenandoah Valley, near the winery. The vineyard is owned and farmed by Ridge and Amanda Easton on their family ranch.
Review:
I tasted a number of Barberas this year, from all over. One stood out not only for quality but also for such a vivid bright personality combined with concentration and age-worthiness. That it was made by long-standing friend Bill Easton of Easton Wines/Domaine de Terre Rouge was icing on the cake. I refer to his recent release:
2021 Easton Barbera Estate, Asti clone Shenandoah valley. Grown on a granite slab with fractured rock (Sierra Series) not red soil. Organically grown, but relatively young vines planted in 2012. Deep violet purple, earthy, floral, raspberry /marasca cherry nose; highly fragrant. Very drinkable yet fine tannins. Lovely finesse and perfumed flavors, with strong ferrous-pomegranate fruit intensity and stony finish.  Solid, deep and can age. Now-2030. 14.5% **+ (***) Joel Butler, December 31, 2024 The WineKnowLog

Our Easton Pinot Noir is grown on rocky slopes at the Duarte-Georgetown Vineyard overlooking the precipitous American River canyon at 2,500 feet in the dramatic Sierra Nevada in California.  It is crafted in small lots from several Pinot Noir clones and was vinified in a traditional manner, that included hand punch-downs and French oak aging.
